Telus Launch Koodo Mobile

On Monday, Koodo Mobile
went live.  This is a new offering that looks like it will compete directly with other pay as you go services like Virgin Mobile.  The plans look very decent and I am particularly surprised to see unlimited text messaging for $5.. along with the lowest price package of $15.. This combination would make for very cheap texting.  One thing that I’ve noticed that is a big step is the digital coverage across the country.  This should make selling phones a lot easier in Saskatchewan where Telus currently offers digital coverage in Regina or Saskatoon.  If they extend their phone lineup and continue to promote their services I see this becoming a very popular across the country.

SIRIUS decision by months end?

SIRIUS Satelite Radio (Nasdaq: SIRI) CEO Mel Karmazin was at an investment conference today and expressed his optimism that the merger between Sirius and XM Satellite Radio will be approved by government regulators by the end of the month.  This has sparked a somewhat huge increase trading today.  There has been a lot of optimism recently surrounding the merger and todays news really adds to the momentum it is carrying.

Reuters has quoted Karmazin as saying, “The fact that it has lingered this long, it has been interpreted … as good news.” Karmazin also went on to say, “clearly if there was a big problem with the merger, it wouldn’t take the (regulators) this long to figure it out. Either you believe we compete with a whole bunch of audio choices or you think there’s a distinct market called satellite radio.”

SIRI was seen trading at up around 2.89 +0.14 (5.09%) while XMSR is also up at 11.71 +0.62 (5.59%) .

Nintendo: A History From Pixels to 3D

A look back on how each of the Nintendo franchises have evolved from pixellated dots into todays high resolution graphics. This is a cool picture where you can see side by side shots of Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Metroid and Kirby. Not to mention the “challenger” Sonic. Its pretty interesting how the characters have slowly changed but there is no mistaking their identity along the way of their development… Well except maybe the last stage of Metroid, where the armour comes off and we are left with a blond hair girl. Another interesting one, is the change in style for the Zelda franchise. It looks like they didn’t know which direction to take that series so it flops around.

Is Will Ferrell Bringing Ron Burgundy Back?

“Will Ferrell mentioned the fact that he had been performing skits as Ron Burgundy during his Funny or Die Comedy Tour. He went on to explain that bringing the character back for these limited engagements has got him thinking of ways to possibly bring him back to the big screen, as in, we are talking Anchorman sequel here.”

I loved Anchorman and would very much like to see a sequel being made even though funny movies like this normally don’t get the sequel treatment. Will Ferrell is having a lot of success lately and I’m sure that this movie would do very well.

Sunshine

I just watched Sunshine on DVD a couple times in the past few days, and I am very impressed with what I see.  The movie was just released January 8th, 2008 and hasn’t really had much publicity thrown its way.  The movie is set in 2057 and takes place aboard a rescue mission that is going to deploy a nuclear device inside the sun to reignite it.  I felt that there were connections between this movie and other movies like 2001 :  A Space Odyssey, Alien, Armageddon with a little mix of 28 Days Later thrown in.   The movie did a really good job of blending Sci-Fi, Action, Suspense, and Drama.  The writing was really good and it really captivated me as the characters were developed.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a futuristic space movie.  One of the highlights I really enjoyed about this film was that during the action sequences the camera was focused and clearly showed the scenes.  Too many movies nowadays are using the shaky cam and it is really hard on the audience.  Another thing I really like was how well this movie looked in high def. I am not a fan of Blu ray so I cannot endorse people buying it on that format, but if it ever becomes available in HD some other way I would definitely recommend that.

Evolution of Coca Cola

This article goes over the 122 year history of Coca Cola, one of my favorite drinks. Its interesting to see how the marketing has slowly evolved over the decades while the drink itself hasn’t changed at all. The Coca Cola deserves a lot of respect for how it has capitalized on the soft drink market and is a well known brand globally.
