Exciting Times

Village RV after fire May 17, 2006I’ve been told I should “Spice it Up”, and I suppose I could. The thing is I don’t really know what I should be spicing up. If anyone has suggestions feel free to tell me. The past couple days have been enjoyable. Working during the day and relaxing after that. It is nice to come home at a regular time and not have to worry about anything. The evening of May 16th was rather interesting. A fire swept threw Village RV on the east side of Regina. It gutted the building and left nothing behind its path. Luckily, nobody was hurt and a lot of the RV’s in the parking lot shouldn’t be affected. It will be a big loss since they just finished that new area maybe a couple years ago. I decided to snap a picture off on my way to work in the morning while I drove by. I always like to take pictures of things while I am driving. My favourite picture has to be the car on its room on the ringroad during a really icy day. Another one would be a picture of 6 cars in the ditch on the trans-canada just outside of Regina. My picture from today is not very good. It’s hard to make out much but you can see the front of what was the main showroom. I guess that is what I get for taking pictures on a cellphone camera driving 100km/h on the highway.

DDR Time

Last week, Thursday, I bought myself DDR. Its such a great game for exercising. I’ve been getting not bad at it. I prefer to stay with Light because the higher difficulties are too much for me. On Light I have been able to get A or B on almost every song. I have 3 or 4 AA’s. So I think it’s not bad for owning the game for 4 days. I also like how you can keep track of how many calories you have burnt off. It’s always fun to look at when you go play for a while then come back and see you burnt off 800 calories! I would keep playing but after my Div 2 soccer game Monday night, I don’t have the muscle to skip. By the way, that was a great game and we played very well together for the first game of the season. This team will do well. The score was 6 – 3 in case anyone is keeping track.

Working Man

I have been working for a week so far at Sask Learning. I have been enjoying it, working on webpages all day can prove to be interesting even though the work appears dull. It’s fun finding problems and stuff with webpages and fixing them, I like to see progress. I’m also proud of myself whenever I can successfully make a webpage smaller in size while maintaining the exact same look and feel. The only thing I’ve not really enjoyed is parking. One of the main reasons people don’t like to go downtown is because parking is terrible and its way overpriced. If the city was actually concerned with revitalizing downtown they would lower parking rates and increase the amount of parkade space available. So I ended up getting a parking place for $50 a month 3 blocks away. I guess its not that far, way better than the $110 right beside my building though. I don’t think my lazieness is worth $60 a month. Lastly, I believe I will be doing a double work term now. Yay, 8 months of no school! This means I will have a lot more money for University.

The Coop program is such a great way for students to get great work experience while making money to pay for their schooling. I would highly recommend that all students who are able to be in the program, to get in. I will be graduating University next year with absolutely no student loans or debts. I will also have 16 months of work experience that will look really good on my resume. Setting up oneself for the future should be a priority and nothing something to be procrastinated on.

E3

Everyone knows that in May it is E3 time. Everybody who enjoys gaming news and all sorts of previews for upcoming games will get their fill for the next week. This year, I am paying close attention to the Xbox360 since I own it. I am also interested to see what Sony’s vision for the future will be. As well, how will everyone reacts the the underpowered Wii. All the talk of games may seem like a lot of fun but its still a business. I have always wanted to enter this business but I don’t think I have any of the necessary skills for me to join. Maybe I could be an analyst since I like to analyze over the decisions that companies make and the consumers reactions to them.

Nick sent me a link to this picture. His interpretation meant something negative towards Wii. My interpretation was that Sony is going to be getting into copyright issues soon since Fox owns the rights to Edward Sissorhands.

Bye Bye Obesity

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/04/health/04soda.html

I thought that this article in the New York Times shows about a real breakthrough in the battle against childhood obesity. It is becoming sick these days seeing how many children are overweight in our society. Then, the parents of these children aren’t doing anything to stop it. With this step being taken by the schools, I think that the widespread obesity will disapear.  I hope that Canada will follow suit and the world will become a better place.  When I was in China, I saw very few people who were overweight, and it was extremely rare that saw a person who was obese.  I’m sure times are changing over there and their obesity rate is bound to rise, but maybe we should be examining more closely the food that we are eating.

Slow Rebates

Today I finally got my $50 USD rebate in the mail from Western Digital. It was for a hard drive I bought from Futureshop on boxing day. It seems like a really long time to wait for a rebate, as during the last five months I could have invested that $50 in something worthwhile.

The problem with the whole thing started when I bought the hard drive online from their boxing day ad. I purchased it as soon as the ad came online which was midnight EST. The thing was, on the invoice or receipt it said 9PM PST. So when I sent the rebate in the first time Western Digital complained back to me that the hard drive wasn’t purchased in the time period that the rebate was available. So I told futureshop the problem and they told me just to complain some more to Western Digital. This wasn’t what I would call excellent customer service. So I ended up writing a letter explaining my situation and sending that in with my rebate again, probably 2 months ago. That brings about the conclusion of the rebate.

Money Markets

The interesting news from today was the governments budget. It talked about taxes cuts and tax credits. I’m sure that I’ll be able to take advantage of both and be able to save myself some money. This take about money got me thinking. Why am I still buying stuff from Canada? Today one American dollar was worth 90.7 cents Canadian. The most interesting thing about this is if I were to go to the United States and buy stuff, and come back to Canada I could save myself some money. I’ll use the Creative Zen Vision M as an example: On Walmart.com’s webpage the price is $282.72 USD, meanwhile on Futureshop.ca’s webpage the same item is $379.99 CDN. If we convert the American price to Canadian using today’s rates we will see that the price is in fact around $312. This would save me $68. Almost as much as it would cost me in gas for the trip down. Now all I need to do is make a list of things I need to buy and get down there and go shopping. Can anyone say, “Roadtrip” ?

Recent DVD releases

I thought I would compile a list of recent DVD releases worth checking out. The list includes releases from the last couple of weeks and is just a summary based on what kinds of DVD’s I would want to buy.

Battlestar Galactica – Season 2.0 Volume 1 – Overall this is a great series. This is the first half of the second season. Very interesting story and plot development. This is Sci-Fi at its finest. Definitely worth checking out.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children – Interesting story. Different graphical style compared to older movie. Story is better than previous.
South Park Season 7 – Not much is needed to be said. South Park is a great series that continues to be funny. Highlight episodes from this season include “Christian Rock Hard” where Cartman makes a band, and then the “Crips” where Timmy and Jimmy join the Crips. As well it also brings back a return of Kenny from his absense of Season 6.
Aeon Flux – This movie is set in the future where 99% of the worlds population is killed from a virus. Those remaining people survived from a cure made by some group who then goes on to lead these people for hundreds of years until a rebellion takes place. Thats where this movie takes place. This movie should be checked out by those who like science fiction as well as those who enjoy stories set in the future.

Games to Buy

With a new job fast approaching, I should have lots of time in the evenings to play games. I decided I should make a list of games I will buy so I don’t end up forgetting anything. A game I know I am going to buy right away is The Elder Scrolls : Oblivion. I had a really great time playing Morrowind and this game is the same style and everything. It has received good reviews so far and should provide me with a really large amount of gameplay. After this, I think it will be about time for another shooter type game, so I will probably go with Battlefield 2 : Modern Combat. This is another game that has received positive reviews. I really liked the looks of the PC version of Battlefield 2 so I’m sure I will like this. Hopefully by this time I will be well into June. If I am, I want to pick up MotoGP 06. Playing the original MotoGP on Xbox Live was a lot of fun, also the fact that I really like racing games sure helped.

Beyond this, I already have a bunch of great games that I should put some more time into. I think I will go back and play Need For Speed : Most Wanted, Project Gotham Racing 3, Top Spin 2, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, and definetly start Perfect Dark Zero. Those games alone should be able to provide me a lot of playtime but I always like to play something new after awhile.

No More McDeal

Today at McDonalds I was in shock. They no longer have McDeals. I had a hard time to believe this since I almost always go with the McDeal of the day. I was informed they now have a Value Picks menu. This reminds me very much of what Wendy’s (Super Value Menu), or BurgerKing would have. All items on this menu are $1.39 or $3.99 for the meal. They have 9 menu items to choose from. I went with the junior chicken, since today was suppose to be McChicken Wednesdays.

Other menu items included:
Bacon Cheese Burger
Double Cheese Burger
Junior McChicken
2 Apple Pies
Coffee and a Muffin
