Borat : Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan opened on Friday. Well it opened somewhere. It’s weekend gross from $26.4 million USD and could easily have been $10 more if it opened in Regina. The movie itself has been generating great reviews, and creating a lot of hype. Not a lot of movies get as much promotion as this movie had received, and then to not come to anywhere in Saskatchewan??, doesn’t make a lot of sense. I hope they will be rectifying this problem soon, or else people might just lose more interest in a show that looks so promising. A quote from one article states, “Despite much advance praise for “Borat,” distributor Fox scaled back its Friday opening to about 800 theaters because it is concerned that the movie wasn’t registering high enough in audience-awareness tracking.”
News is already out on the follow up to Borat, with a movie called Bruno. Universal won the rights to the movie for $42.5 million. This is a lot considering they don’t even know if Borat will be able to generate that much money.  This upcoming movie is starring a character called Bruno, and from what has been written, he will be interviewing people in the fashion industry and homophobes. That should be entertaining!
I was disapointed that it wasn’t available here – even the movie theatres were showing previews. You have to wonder if it was a decision they made here, because it’s available everywhere else from bc to quebec. Maybe they thought saskatchewan just wouldn’t get it. Now I have one copy where I can’t see much and one copy that’s in german… just need to put them together somehow.
If they make another movie it should be with Ali G – Bruno gets funny reactions too but “people in the fashion industry and homophobes” aren’t that interesting to me. Ali is a lot funnier when he interviews people with questions like “Is Jesus really real, or is he like your father dressing up?”. Then again, they already made a movie with him.
I have a feeling it wasn’t a local decision. I’m sure they could have sold out a few showings of Borat this weekend if it was available. They will probably have it in for next weekend but I think for some people that will be too late.
Another Ali G movie would be interesting. The only thing is, people being interviewed can’t know that its for a comedy movie and the reactions have to remain real. If the people being interviewed already know about the character the whole effect is ruined. Thus the reason why they couldn’t just go ahead and make a second Borat movie now. I’m sure the Bruno movie will be funny though.
You might be right – it seemed to be playing in 20 places in ontario, and anyone in canada should know they won’t all be bigger than regina.
It’s no surprise that fox is behind this. After all that promotion they won’t even let people give them money.
I think the last Ali G movie was a british thing… even now most people here wouldn’t know about it.
